Framework roles

Frameworks often define the roles and responsibilities behind their obligations, such as a Compliance Officer or Health and Safety Representative. The Roles tab on the Frameworks page brings these together so you can map them to real people.

Where to find it

Go to the admin sidebar, then Compliance, then Frameworks, and open the Roles tab. The tab shows a count of the roles defined across all your active frameworks combined, so a growing number simply reflects how many jurisdictions you've activated rather than extra work to do.

How roles relate to obligations

Each framework decomposes into obligations (the individual rules it sets), and some of those obligations name a responsible role. The Roles tab is the consolidated view of every such role across your frameworks:

  • A single role can span multiple frameworks. Because controls and obligations are shared, the same role (a Compliance Officer, say) often carries responsibilities that satisfy several jurisdictions at once.

  • Mapping a role to a person connects the framework's expectation to someone accountable in your organisation, which is what makes the obligation actionable rather than theoretical.

  • The count is cumulative. Activating another jurisdiction may introduce new roles, but shared responsibilities mean the list rarely grows one-for-one with each framework.

For how obligations and control sharing work more broadly, see Understanding compliance frameworks and Working with multiple frameworks.

What the Roles tab shows

The Roles tab is grouped by framework-defined role rather than laid out as a flat table. Each role is a header, for example "Contact Officer", showing a summary of its coverage such as "6 users, 6 assignments across 6 frameworks", with an Assign action beside it. Expand a role to see the people assigned to it; each person's row shows their name, the number of frameworks the role covers for them, and a "Since {date}" showing when they were assigned.

At the top of the tab there's an Assign Role button and a Search Roles box. The tab is not read-only: this is where you assign people to framework roles. The view maps role to users to frameworks; it does not show a per-control breakdown.

Assigning a person to a role

Use the top-level Assign Role button, or the Assign action beside a specific role, to connect a framework role to someone in your organisation. This is what makes the obligation actionable: the framework's expectation is now tied to an accountable person. Use Search Roles to find a role quickly when you have many active frameworks.

Application roles vs framework roles: Framework roles are the responsibilities a framework defines. They are different from the ReFresh application roles (Member, Admin, and Organization Admin) that control what someone can do in the app. For application roles, see the "User roles and permissions" article in Getting Started.
